This distinction is possible given that the City is home to the Headquarters of the U.S. Military Corps of Engineers and the world-renowned Corps of Engineer’s Engineering & Research Development Center (ERDC).

Research & Development Center of the U.S. Military (ERDC)
Vicksburg is also home to the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers Engineering Research & Development Center which focuses on solving the toughest engineering challenges facing the U.S. Military and the nation. The ERDC focuses on five mission areas including Military Engineering, Geospatial Research & Engineering, Engineered Resilient Systems, Environmental Quality & Installations, and Civil Works.
The ERDC employs over 2,000 people in five laboratories including the Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL), the Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), the Environmental Laboratory (EL), the Information Technology Laboratory, and the Geotechnical & Structures Laboratory (GSL).

The Graduate Institute brings together a number of Universities in Vicksburg to offer academic credit and graduate degrees to ERDC and Corps of Engineers employees. The program is currently offered on site or via video presentations for other ERDC locations.

Vicksburg takes its Engineer City title very seriously and that is why it has a robust STEM outreach program to promote careers in Science, Technology,Engineering & Math. Volunteers from area employers, including the Corps of Engineers and ERDC organize and promote STEM related programs for area schools and for the community. These programs strive to teach children in the region how to enjoy the fun and fulfilling process of understanding the world through science.
