Architectural styles of the region are a reflection of the prosperity of different periods combined with a large measure of ethnic diversity. As new people of all backgrounds came into the lower Mississippi area, they brought ideas of style and function that were adopted locally. This helped develop the remarkable breadth of style that is now found in the region.

LIVING AMONG
history
The Vicksburg National Military Park preserves the site of the American Civil War Battle of Vicksburg, waged from March 29 to July 4, 1863. The park, located in Vicksburg, Mississippi, (flanking the Mississippi River), also commemorates the greater Vicksburg Campaign which led up to the battle. Reconstructed forts and trenches evoke memories of the 47-day siege that ended in the surrender of the city. Victory here and at Port Hudson, farther south in Louisiana, gave the Union control of the Mississippi River.
This one-of-a-kind historic site offers visitors a chance to appreciate hundreds of meticulously crafted monuments, tablets and markers – many of which were constructed prior to 1917 – while learning of the vital role Vicksburg played in the American Civil War.
LIVING AMONG
art
Given that Vicksburg is home to National Military Park, it also boasts the largest collection of public art in the State of Mississippi, a gift given to Vicksburg, Mississippi, and the Country, by all of the States that participated in the Civil War and that today honor their participation in that historic event through artful representations at the Vicksburg National Military Park and in Vicksburg.
In the mid 1900’s the City expanded passed the Military Park absorbing certain areas of the park and building roadways in them but without disturbing the monuments and works of art that were in place as part of the Military Park. This conservation step taken by the City allows today’s residents to move through many parts of the City while driving by significant works of art, monuments, and statutes that honor the Civil War history
Vicksburguers enjoy, practice, and share their artistic spirit in many ways in our community. Throughout the year, our community enjoys a number of events that display the performance, visual, and applied arts in many of its forms.
